Not an easy trip to the store

The Washington Post today ran an article on the disappearance of grocery stores across New York City.  It’s particularly timely, given that the one small store that was just literally around the corner from me, just closed down about 4 months ago.As real estate prices grow (and although they aren’t soaring with the economy now, there is still modest growth) more and more buildings will be bought and sold to make room for newer developments.  And those developments won’t include a grocery store.A report obtained by the Post shows that in the last six years, the number of grocery stores in the five boroughs have declined by one-third.What is being done?  Well, neighborhood bodegas are being solicited by city government to carry more healthy foods, including milk and fresh fruits and vegetables.  The city is also working on an agreement to license streetside fresh fruit vendors in certain areas of the city too. High end stores like Whole Foods will do well in the city, but they aren’t for everyone. So when you walk past a grocery store on your way home - you just might want to pop in an buy something - show your support - keep them in the city.
